And now, for my next trick, I will fly for free for the rest of my life!
Well, that's the plan, anyway - never pay for another plane ticket! You see, I get spoiled really quickly. As you may remember, I flew home for Christmas with a voucher I had received earlier this year for volunteering to be bumped to a later flight. It was pretty nice to fly home at the busiest travel time of the year for only the cost of my bag.
Well, on the way back from Louisville today, my original flight was canceled, which meant the next flight out was way over-booked. And they, again, needed volunteers to go on a later flight. I jumped up to the desk and asked when the next flight out would be, and it turned out, although I would be going through DC, instead of Charlotte (hallelujah!), I would only get in about 35 minutes later than the Charlotte folks. Well, I figured $400 for a half-hour of waiting was well worth it, so I took USAirways up on their offer, and PRAYED fervently that my luggage wouldn't get stuck in Charlotte somewhere.
My flight to DC went very smoothly and got in 15 minutes early. And then my flight to Norfolk went smoothly and also got in 15 minutes early (it was the same crew - can I make a special request for them again next time?). All of this meant that I arrived at exactly the same time as the folks on my original Charlotte flight, since it was delayed. Of course.
I didn't have to wait for my luggage. It wasn't lost. I didn't have to sit in miserable Charlotte airport while they pranced around wasting my time just for the fun of it (I'm pretty convinced that is what happens down there). And, I got $400 towards my next flight. God's favor, anyone?
So, that's the plan for all future flights. Get bumped each time, so the next one will be free. And if I'm on a really tight schedule, I'll just use the frequent flyer miles I'm accruing from all these free flights. I've beat the system!

Football politics are the worst kind
I had every intention of writing something last night.
I was going to talk about the visit from my half-sister and her family and the cousin who showed up quite unexpectedly.
I was going to talk about the gifts I received this Christmas.
I was going to talk about the snow that finally came to Louisville and blanketed the ground so prettily!
I was going to talk about all of these things, until a small tragedy occurred.
You see, my Indianapolis Colts were 14-0. 14 and 0. They had not lost a game all year. They held the longest winning streak of any football team in history, beating the Patriots' streak by two games. They were on track to complete the regular season undefeated, only the third team in history to do so. They were set to win the Super Bowl, completing the second perfect season in history and the only 19-0 perfect season.
And then, the general manager lost his mind.
In typical Colts fashion, he decided that halfway through the Colts' game against the 7-7 New York Jets, when the Colts were leading a mere 15-0, he was going to sit Peyton Manning. Please reread that sentence. Bill Polian, general manager of the Colts, and Jim Caldwell, head coach, decided that they were going to sit Peyton. Williams. Manning. The hero of Indianapolis. The glue that holds the team together. The love of my life.
This tactic is par for the course in Indianapolis, but in the past, it hasn't really mattered too much. Usually, once their playoff spot is secured, the Colts will rest Peyton and the other starters to give them a break in preparation for the post-season, and in hopes of preventing further injuries. If they've already lost a game or two, no one really cares, except that the strategy doesn't usually work. The players get SO well-rested, they get rusty. And, they lose the momentum.
This time, though, the Colts really made a bad decision. Not only have they lost the momentum of a 23 game winning streak and a perfect season thus far, they have also lost any mental or emotional edge. They've angered their fans. They've angered their players (you should have seen Peyton's face on the sidelines. He was not a happy 6'5" quarterback). They've angered the entire NFL who sees this move as laying down and asking for defeat. Which is what they got. A 29-15 defeat.
It's one thing to lose fair and square. It's another thing entirely to just give up. And that's what the Colts did. They just gave up. They had the opportunity to accomplish the perfect season, and they just said, "no thanks."
My heart is broken. My phone has been blowing up from Pats fans who want to gloat. And when I told Mark that I was going to read the Bible for comfort, he said I should go read Mark (Sanchez) 14:1. I did not find that one bit funny (Mark Sanchez is the QB for the Jets).
However, I did see snow. I did get a lot of nice Christmas gifts. And, I am heading back to Va. Beach tomorrow. So I suppose life will go on. But it would have gone on just a little sweeter had my Colts been 15-0.

Maranatha means the Lord is coming soon
Today is my sister's birthday. Now, before you begin to feel sorry for her being born the day after Christmas, allow me to explain.
When my sister was growing up, my mom was very concerned that she would feel like her birthday was forgotten or had been merged into Christmas, or that she had been gipped on gifts. And since this would be quite traumatic for any small child, my mom decided that we would also celebrate my sister's half-birthday, June 26. Only, my sister's birthday never was merged into Christmas, nor did she ever get gipped out of any presents. Instead, she got twice as many birthday gifts every year as my brother and I. A point that I have clearly not tired of making.
But, I suppose my sister always was a special child. On December 26, 1986, my mom had a miscarriage - she was about 4 or 5 months along, and this was her second one, (the first one was about a year and half or so before I was born). We were all at my grandparents' house for Christmas, and as my mom laid on the couch recovering, my grandma came over, saying she had a word from the Lord that one year to the day, my mom would have another baby.
Well, of course, having just miscarried after being sick for most of her pregnancy, my mom was in no condition to even consider being pregnant again within 3 months, and she pretty much forgot all about my grandma's word. For about a year. Because come December, my mom was again nearing her due date. In fact, she went to the hospital on Christmas Day, only to be sent home again. But, come December 26, she was back in the hospital and my sister was born. Two weeks early, and one year to the day after my mom had miscarried.
And maybe that's the real reason she gets twice the amount of presents.

Wonderful Counselor...Prince of Peace
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Oh, the joys of being home for the holidays. I am listening to my father talk to a non-American telemarketer in the other room, "I can't understand you. Can you repeat that again", while my mom stage-whispers from across the room what he should say. My brother has secluded himself with a computer in his room, while my sister is wrapping presents downstairs. And I sit here by the Christmas tree, listening to Andy Williams and still PRAYING for snow.
I'm home for about a week, so, naturally, I brought a huge suitcase. Only problem was, most of the suitcase was filled with presents. So, I was forced to only pack 3 pairs of shoes, plus the boots I wore through the airport (I just can't bring myself to wear comfy shoes to the airport, because the one time I don't wear stilettos will be the time I meet Peyton. I just know it).
But back to my original point - just let that set in for a moment. I have four pairs of shoes with me. For 8 days. And one pair is gym shoes, so they don't even count. I better get some new shoes for Christmas, or I'm just not sure that I'll be able to make it until I go back to Virginia Beach. The situation is that dire.
Good news, however - my sense of taste has mostly returned, so all those Christmas cookies just lying forlornly around the house, waiting for someone to put them out of their misery will not have much longer to wait. I'm coming, gingerbread boys!

Hey friends - I'm sorry I missed you yesterday. I was watching my Voices of Lee on the finale of the Sing-Off. They came in third, so I was sad, but I'm happy for Nota, the winners. They will likely have a good career, and can probably use the money more than Lee University. (I still think that Voices was technically the best, but Nota is probably more marketable).
Moving on, I'm not going to say much tonight, mainly because I feel like poop. I have a terrible cold that makes really doing anything seem utterly undesirable. But, I'm home now, so my mom can cook for me, and I can sleep all day, if I want to. Hope your week of Christmas is faring better!

I tend to overlook this verse. I've known it since I was about 12 and had to memorize it in Missionettes, yet I don't think about it much. It seems like sometimes I forget that the things I think about, focus on, and spend my time on are just as important as my actions - the nice things I do for others, the sinful things I don't. Because if I'm not focusing on the Lord and things that glorify Him and are in accordance with His word, eventually, I'm going to become distracted by and desensitized to the things that are sinful. Soon, those negative actions will outweigh the positive - not out of a conscious decision, but because that's what my mind has become accustomed to.
This is a constant struggle for me. I love secular music, but I can't listen to it exclusively. It's not sinful, necessarily, but I hardly think that Brit Spears's songs qualify as "noble" or "pure." Likewise, I read a lot of secular things - blogs, books, etc. Again, not necessarily sinful, but if they are glamorizing a sinful lifestyle, or even more simply, if they are not glorifying God, I need to be careful how much time I spend in them.
When I was younger, I thought a balanced diet meant you could eat half sweets and half good food. I think I treat my spiritual life like that - and sometimes even less balanced. I think, if I just spend equal amounts of time in secular things as I do with God and in things that draw me closer to Him, it'll all balance out. But, it doesn't work that way. God demands (and deserves) more than half my time - which is usually a very distracted half at best, anyway. And if I want to walk in all the blessings that a close relationship with him affords (I always love using that word), I need to - and want to - give Him more than half.
I think I just found my verse for 2010.

Saturday Shorts
It's like Friday Fragments, only, well, you know.
* Once again the ENTIRE country is snowed in, except me. To rub salt in the wound, even Richmond, an hour and a half away, got snow, and DC, 3 1/2 hours away, has 2 feet or something equally blizzard like and wonderful. No fair!
* Snow is predicted over the next week in Kentucky, though, so maybe when I go home I'll get a white Christmas, afterall!
* Speaking of White Christmas, I am watching my fave Christmas movie again. And eating chili. This scene could only be more perfect if there was...(c'mon, I'm pretty sure you can finish that sentence for me by now).
* After watching every single episode of Gilmore Girls multiple times, I have finally found my absolute favorite scene. Really, I will laugh at this scene every time I see it until Jesus calls me home. (The whole scene is funny, but if you don't want to watch all 2:25, start it at 1:51. And please let me know if you cry from laughing so hard.)
* Our Christmas play last night was a smash hit. And the audience laughed at me when they were supposed to, and not when they weren't. So, as far as I'm concerned, my lil' red cape and I stole the show.
* Celebs tell where they are on Twitter all the time, and it frustrates me that I'm not there. If I lived in San Diego, I could totally have eaten breakfast with Ochocinco. If I lived in DC, I could have built a snowman in Dupont Circle with Andy Baldwin, navy surgeon and former star of the Bachelor. I'm tempted to drive up, anyway.
* Speaking of the Bachelor, my friend met Jake, the new season's star, in the Atlanta airport last week. I am hoping that when I fly into LAX in February, my dream of meeting a celeb in the airport will finally be realized, and all my years of running through airports in high heels will have finally paid off.
* This morning I was thinking about teaching English in France. I think it'd be fun to live over there for a semester, but I'm pretty sure I'm too old to quit my job to go make no money just because I want to "experience life."
* Today, I bought a Christmas present for Mary's (one of the bffs) son, Asher. It's flannel (of course). Mary's going to have to beat the little girls off of him. (It's even cuter when you can see how small these little man clothes are.)

* The Pioneer Woman is giving away Amazon gift cards worth hundreds of dollars on her blog. I want to win one very badly, but my skills at internet contest winning are not as tested as those of radio contests, so I'm not holding my breath.
* My Colts are still undefeated - 14 games into the season. I think they're going to go all the way! And Peyton Manning for MVP!

God bless us, everyone!
What a week this has been! Work was devastatingly slow, of course, which I'm only complaining about because I'm so tired that slowness at work means I'm on the verge of dozing off all day! I am yawning even as I type this. And not one of those petite, feminine yawns. No, these are the deep, eye-watering, hope-there-are-no-flies-in-the-room-because-they-will-surely-find-my-open-mouth yawns.
The reason for my tiredness is simple - I have had rehearsal for our Christmas play every night this week. Well, except for Wednesday, but that was voting night on the Sing-Off, and you know I was so excited that Lee made it to the finals that I couldn't possibly go to sleep right away (you can still vote, by the way, so be sure to vote for Voices!)
Tonight, though, is the big night - our first performance! And you know what, I think we're ready! Every show I have ever been in has gone exactly the same way. One week out, I look at the mess that is our play and think, "There is absolutely no way this thing can come together." But, miraculously, it always does.
I have a very small part in this musical (the Gospel According to Scrooge - basically, it's a Christmas Carol, but Scrooge gets saved in the end), but I get to wear a beautiful red cape, so I am blissfully happy. If I owned this cape, I would wear it in real life, because I love it. As it is, I'll try to get a picture for you guys.
Any Christmas play/pageant plans in your futures?

I had actually never heard of this song until a few years ago, when Mark introduced me to it. For some reason, it's one of his faves, and while it's not one of mine, I'm including it because I do very much love the true story behind the song.
In 1914, during the first World War, soldiers were in their trenches on Christmas Day during a temporary holiday cease fire. At some point, some German soldiers started singing Silent Night (in German, of course), and the Allies began to join in, everyone singing in their own languages. As the song went on, soldiers began venturing out of their trenches, exchanging small gifts and playing games with the enemy troops.
Of course, this lion-laying-down-with-the-lamb peace couldn't last forever, and the soldiers did soon have to return to their trenches and resume their task. But, I love how the power of the Christmas spirit, and the message behind it, transcended even hatred and war.
(P.S. I tell this story in my Western Civ class, and show this video. It's really the only video I can find for this song, which is why I show it, but I also just think it's so cute - some kid's school project.)

In case you missed it, Voices of Lee - from my school!!! - is in the top 5 on NBC's new accapella competition, and they are amazing. Watch it, and vote for them. I will be.

I won't forget to give you the Christmas song, though. I don't usually like kids singing - they annoy me or sometimes even creep me out. But, I LOVE this song - their little voices are so sweet, and the sentiment of the song is so pure and genuine. (And, my sister sang it in a church Christmas play when she was like 8, so it has sentimental value, too.) Oh, and this is another video you don't really have to watch, unless you really like synchronized Christmas lights.
In case you missed it, Voices of Lee - from my school!!! - is in the top 5 on NBC's new accapella competition, and they are amazing. Watch it, and vote for them. I will be.

I won't forget to give you the Christmas song, though. I don't usually like kids singing - they annoy me or sometimes even creep me out. But, I LOVE this song - their little voices are so sweet, and the sentiment of the song is so pure and genuine. (And, my sister sang it in a church Christmas play when she was like 8, so it has sentimental value, too.) Oh, and this is another video you don't really have to watch, unless you really like synchronized Christmas lights.
